We don't have very many pictures of my grandfather with all of his fingers. He lost most of the ends of them to frostbite. I only knew him after the accident. He had artificial limbs from the knees down and stubby fingers and thumbs that he covered in Mercurochrome, or Monkey Blood as he called it, every night to ease the pain.
Here he is with my mother, Lorena, on the left, and Virginia, her sister, on the right. It looks like the High School, now Ash School, in the background.
