I don't know about how rare a bird with a red head is but in human heads; redheads make up less than 2% of the world's population.
Growing up a redhead, I was made fun of, what they are labeling as bullying in today's world. I have always known I had special redhead powers. Redheads always stand out in a crowd; therefore, they have a double responsibility to be e-special-ly kind and make a real contribution to the world!
Eighty percent of redheads have an MC1R gene variant. Red hair can originate from several changes on the MC1R-gene.
Some interesting know facts about redheads are:
Redheads do not grey. Our hair will go rose gold and then white.
We are uber sensitive to hot and cold pain, so call us the groundhogs of the human race because we can tell when it is getting colder before others.
Our hair is thicker, but this is because of the size of the hairs not the number of hairs.
We are more prone to skin cancers.
We are harder to anesthetize, but we respond more quickly to pain killers.
Bees are attracted to redheads.
Redheads are different in many ways, and their scent is unique. The first recorded evidence of this was from Dr. Augustin Galopin in his 1886 book, Le Parfum de la Femme. One of his theories was that every woman gave off a specific bouquet of scents based solely on hair color. When he tested this theory out on redheads, he was able to detect our particular scent. For redheads or women with chestnut hair, Galopin observed their scent to be that of ambergris, an earthy and sensual scent.
And Dr. Galopin, as it turns out, wasn’t entirely wrong. Because scent is different when you have red hair, especially when you apply a scent to your skin. While perfume on a blond or brunette will smell the same, whatever scent you put on a red’s skin will smell different. To be clear this bizarre phenomenon is only true of redheads, and it’s the result of our unique biochemistry.
Redheads generate their own Vitamin D.
4 in 10 people carry the redhead gene.
I have acquired several wonderful books about redheads, on being a redhead, redhead myths, etc.
