The word memorial is defined as preserving the memory.  That sums up our lives.  Everything is a memory once it occurs.  I think to memorialize important life changing moments in history is necessary.  Our society lives such crazy busy, self-centered lives, and it is important to stop the wheels on the bus from time to time to remind us of how we got to where we are.

We may whine and moan about all of the "Hallmark Holidays," but they really are important days for us to think about.  They ground us, bring us back to a place of reality.  Sometimes with cheerful hearts and sometimes with sad hearts, but to a place of reflection.  What we do with the face in the mirror then is our footprint on the world.
