As I was reading on-line about Christmas I found some interesting tidbits of information. Did you know that celebrating christmas predates the birth of Christ. Seems the Europeans have the longest "dibs" on the holiday in the winter solstice, as the beginning of longer days and the rebirth of the sun.
Many other celebrations were recorded through time that fell around this season. It wasn't until the fourth century that the church decided that Christians needed a December holiday to rival solstice celebrations. Church leaders selected Dec. 25 for the Feast of the Nativity ( A.D. 336).
Throughout history the celebration of Christmas did not always have a good reputation with Christians. Christmas was actually banned from festivities in the late 1600s. In the late 1800s and through the 1900s, Christmas became a holiday of "old traditions" where the focus was on the real reason for the season.
By the 20th century, we started to see the commercial side of Christmas. You know...stores selling decorations in October?
Christmas gift-giving has its roots in the Three Kings' offerings to the infant Jesus. Some countries still celebrate the traditional date of the Magi's arrival -- January 6 or Three Kings' Day -- with a Christmas-like gift exchange. We should celebrate that, too. Or, we can just give gifts from Christmas through Three Kings' Day!
Was Jesus really born on Christmas Day? No one knows really. The Word does not give us that specific, but in Luke 2:8 we read, "And there were shepherds living out in the fields nearby, keeping watch over their flocks at night." so, it seems that maybe since they were out in the fields at night with their flock that just maybe it was in the spring when the babies were being born. Does it matter, really? No.
What does matter is that God created us and loved us so much that he came to us in Jesus and left us with the Holy Spirit. It is through faith that we accept this without questioning details, knowing that it is for us, his children that all this happened. I find that AMAZING.
Merry CHRISTmas to you and yours!!!
