The Hotel Ware vintage sign was bought 25 years ago by Virgil Lowry from Cactus Signs. He had several vintage Plainview signs that were bought at a local auction this past weekend. One sign traveled to Lubbock and two to Abilene. Both of these bidders would have bought the Hotel Ware sign, as well. In the end, she stayed in Plainview, was loaded up, strapped down, and I followed her into town. Thank you to Melinda Brown, Main street Director, Ricky Summers, City of Plainview Park Superintendent, and Victor Showalter and his sons, for arranging this pickup & delivery!!!

The Streetscape Project in Downtown Plainview has begun. We need you to inconvenience shop and support your downtown businesses! It WILL be an inconvenience from 8th to 5th for about 9 months. They will move block by block, east side to west side. Please, park and walk and support downtown. You can shop them online; they will do curbside and mail. Many will deliver to you if needed. The Plainview Downtown Association will help our businesses if you need assistance. We have so much momentum right now. Please help us keep it moving!!!
The inconvenience will be well worth the end result!

A few days ago, I was tracked down by a lady holding a local auction. She shared that the Hotel Ware sign would be up for auction. She sent a picture. I immediately sent it to Melinda Brown, Main Street Director, Jeff Snyder, City Manager, and Hotel Ware building owner, David Mull, Hale County judge, to see if we might keep her here. It happened today. The 1930s Hotel Ware sign was allowed to stay in Plainview. She was auctioned off, and we get to keep her here. I was the representative that got the humbling honor to attend the auction and bid on her. I wish you could have heard the cheers from the crowd when it was final. PHS graduates and Plainview's community stood tall with us in the belief that she should stay local. One day, we know she will light our downtown with neon and a big welcome! Can you imagine if she could talk, the stories she would tell; like, my parents were from Plainview, and they spent their honeymoon night at the Hotel Ware. They walked in as newlyweds under this sign. This is super exciting. A long day, but well worth it.

A sweet friend, Judy Williams, sent the 1929 P.H.S. yearbook with her husband Ken, to give to me at church this morning. What a treasure of fun exploring! Thank you, Judy.
Loray Covington is the owner of the yearbook. Her picture is colored out. She may not have liked her picture. She seemed loved by all. "Happy go lucky. Smiling as you go spreading happiness along the paths of life." I would like this same thing said about me. I like her!!!
This picture of Loray and her siblings??? was inside the yearbook. She is on the top right.
This is the 1929 PHS Orchestra.
I found this interesting. The first High School Chamber of Commerce was organized in October of 1928.
A parade in downtown Plainview.
This is most likely the senior dinner held in the City Auditorium on Broadway Street or is that the school cafeteria?
Some of the advertisers...
I wonder if Loray's father owned this shop?
My grandfather, Hugh Robert Etter, worked for Burt Electric before he opened Hugh R. Etter Electric, located behind the City Auditorium (where the City Hall is now).
In exploring the 1929 yearbook, I discovered that Loray planned to attend Wayland College, as did Hazel. "Dear Loray, Well, what a swell bird you turned out to be. I guess we will argue our way through Wayland the same as we did P.H.S. However, I am glad you are there ~ it will add beauty and intellect to Dear-Old-Wayland." Hazel
