J.W. Hamby, what do I say about you today? I believe for me as a young girl growing up in Plainview that I would describe you as steadfast.
Plainview has lost a great businessman, a crucial part of our downtown history, as well as throughout our community, J.W. Hamby served all his life faithfully, from the early days of the Hamby Company to today by providing entrepreneurs the opportunity to lease one of his many buildings.
He was more than the business and buildings. He stood on the firm foundation of Jesus Christ, my kind of man. I have known of J.W. throughout my life. It has only been in the last twenty or so years that I have had the opportunity to rub shoulders with his genuine and steadfast nature as we strive for a better historical downtown.
I remember a few years ago when J.W. was selected as Plainview's Man of the Year. I remember being so excited about this honor. He oozed humbleness in everything he did, a trait of his faith.
It is okay to be honored in this life journey, but it was evident where his honor rested, and today, he is there, seeing Jesus face to face.
God brings people in and out of our lives for his purpose, some for a season, some for a lifetime, always for good.
Thank you, J.W., for your example for me and so many others.
Therefore, my beloved brothers, be steadfast, immovable, always abounding in the work of the Lord, knowing that in the Lord your labor is not in vain. 1 Corinthians 15:58
There is not enough space for me to express how much
our family loved and appreciated you. You were truly
a man of God. You provided financial help for my bro
to attend LCU when he worked for you. You were the one we could always turn to whatever the need. The help you gave our Mom when she was at Santa Fe House & the list goes on & on. The wonderful times we enjoyed at
your cabin in N.M. We have many great memories since
1956 when we moved to Plainview and met you. You will be missed by so many. Prayers for your Family.

My family grew up with the Hamby family as my dad worked for JW for many many years. JW was a generous and honorable man that our family was blessed to know. JW was still part of our family as he was so generous to let our whole family enjoy his beautiful cabin by the river in the mountainsby the Pecos River! My thoughts and prayers are with the Hamby family at this time.
