Devil's Claw. I don't know how many of these we picked up playing in the Running Water Draw when we were kids but enough that I could have made some pain cream today had I kept them! In researching online, I found that we could have eaten the seeds and felt like we were on the tropical isle of West Texas because they taste like coconuts. Why did we not know this?
Wolfe Bane, Leopards Bane, Grapple Plant or Devil's Claw, call it what you will but they pinch when they grab your ankles walking through the draw in your tennis shoes. I suppose that's one reason you should be wearing boots. Another would be snakes, and I'm thankful we never had that encounter.
Did you know that Devil's Claw is used in most over the counter pain rubs? It is a great relief for headaches and general nerve pain. It soothes and heals sores, ulcers, boils, bruises, sprains and relieves irritations from trauma, arthritis and muscle pain. Wow, sounds like a miracle plant. I found many blends that use Devil's Claw. Here are two...
1 tablespoon Devil's Claw infused oil
1/4 cup coconut oil
1 tsp Vitamin E
20 drops peppermint essential oil
Melt the coconut oil in the microwave. Add the Vitamin E oil, the Devil's Claw oil and the peppermint oil and mix well. Pour into a glass jar and allow to set.
Another blend is this one...added heat for muscle pain.
1/4 cup coconut oil
1/8 cup shea butter
2 tablespoons Devil's Claw powder
2 tablespoons olive oil or sweet almond oil
1 teaspoon cayenne powder
Mix the olive or sweet almond oil, cayenne powder, and the devils claw powder. Heat and mix well. Add the shea butter, coconut oil, and mix until a liquid, making sure the powder blends throughout the oils. Mix well and pour into a glass jar and allow to cool completely to set.
And, the most interesting things bless my life. Like today, as I was visiting downtown retailers, about our 2ndsaturdayplainview.com open houses on November the 10th, I look down and there rests a Devil's Claw.
I wonder how it got from the pasture to the bricks of Broadway?
